Elderberry Blend: The elderberry plant was well known to the native people of North America. The edible berries were used for medicine and dyes for basketry, while the plant stems and branches were used for arrow shafts, flutes, whistles, clapper sticks, and folk medicine. Early European Settlers were familiar with Elderberries as well. Since the middle ages in Europe, the plant was considered a Holy Tree, capable of restoring good health, and an aid to longevity.
Lemon Balm: Steeped as a tea, the colonials sipped lemon balm as for its uplifting effects: “balme makes the heart merry and joyfull, and strengtheneth vitall spirits...it drives away the care of the minde*.” (The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes (1597) - J. Gerard). Lemon balm has an subtle aroma of citrus that makes it useful as a strewing herb to freshen rooms.
Cinnamon: “The distilled water hereof comforteth the weake, cold, and feeble stomacke... it amendeth the evill colour of the face, maketh sweet breath, and giveth a most pleasant taste unto divers sorts of meates.” (The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes (1597) - J. Gerard). Cinnamon is spicy and exotic, grown in distant islands of the East Indies. Sip cinnamon tea for a sense of warmth.
